OPEN ACCESS for COLONOSCOPY

In order to improve the convenience of the exam, a pre-procedure visit may no longer be required for some
patients (with exceptions), saving the patient both time and money.

Guidelines: Patients who choose to schedule a procedure without having a consultation must meet certain criteria:

• They must have a recent visit with a history and physical from their primary care provider within the past 12 months.

• Age 50-70 (age 40-49 IF they have a first degree relative with colon cancer at age 50 or younger)
• No previous problems with anesthesia or conscious sedation

• Anti/coagulation/anti platelet drugs (coumadin, Plavix, etc.) should be stopped one week prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of bleeding. No valvular heart disease, including mitral valve prolapse (with murmur).

• Have no significant systemic disturbance from illness

• Have no heart, lung, kidney or liver problems requiring active medical treatment.

• No uncontrolled endocrine (e.g. diabetes) or psychiatric disease (includes active alcohol abuse)

• No gastrointestinal symptoms (a formal consultation is indicated in patients with symptoms, although a colonoscopy may later part of the evaluation.)

• No chronic use of narcotics, benzodiazepines or other sedatives.
